[Southpoint Spotlight] Durham Coffee Shop's Lesser-Known Location

An alert reader let me know about a possible new coffee shop and bakery in South Durham – and when I went to check it out, I discovered it wasn’t new. Not exactly.

New-ish? Sure. It opened in May. The shop in the SouthCourt building at 3211 Shannon Rd., No. 106, is a new Durham location of Joe Van Gogh.

The SouthCourt location of Joe Van Gogh opened in May. It’s open Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Photo: Wes Platt.

Business in the SouthCourt location has been a bit sluggish, company founder Robbie Roberts said.

“Midsummer opening is not ideal for a coffee bar, so it has been a little slow,” he said. “But we are beginning to see repeat business and the folks who are in the building every day are becoming friends.”

It might be out of the way for some, but it’s a well-kept secret for others. Maybe not all that well-kept for long, if word gets out.

“Because of the outdoor shade and the quiet indoor public space, we feel like patience will be virtuous,” Roberts said. “We hope to be discovered by more of the folks who live and work in that area – we know it’s out of the way, but it’s an excellent space for our bakery needs and a quiet place for customers to do some work or meet friends or for business.”

The SouthCourt shop is open Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Joe Van Gogh also has locations on Broad Street near Duke University East Campus and in the Woodcroft shopping center in South Durham.
