Project Hail Mary author Andy Weir recently stuck his foot in his mouth at warp speed when he publicly trashed Star Trek during a podcast interview.

Weir is apparently an old-school Trek fan and doesn’t enjoy some of the newer stuff like Discovery or Starfleet Academy. And while he backtracked his statements as being “taken out of context” in a public apology, his behavior does strike a familiar chord amongst middle-aged Trekkies like myself.

Do aging fanboys have a problem with new Trek because it reminds us that we’re no longer kids? Are we more upset that Starfleet Academy harshed our nostalgia buzz or annoyed because it often got angsty and obnoxious? It is hard to admit that things change, especially when it’s related to our youthful glory days. But you can’t ignore that Star Trek is 60 years old this year. You don’t survive six decades in pop culture without evolving.
