Support Ultra-Local News in South Durham

Ultra-local journalism can illuminate vital issues and drive positive change right here in our backyard of South Durham, but it’s also got the potential to inform, educate, and inspire readers beyond our borders.

With that in mind, Southpoint Access is launching a fundraising campaign to support the production of in-depth content focused on three critical areas of interest to our readers:

  • K-12 education and outcomes.
  • Development and environmental impacts.
  • Affordable housing.

We’re partnering with a fiscal sponsor, the Local Media Foundation, to offer a way to accept tax-deductible donations to support hiring two freelance reporters, a freelance photographer, and a freelance video editor to bring these stories to life. They’ll work with Southpoint Access Editor and Publisher Wes Platt to explore the challenges and triumphs within our community, providing insightful and engaging stories.

In K-12 education, we’ll look at how our schools are preparing students for future success, with a lens on innovative programs, teacher and student experiences, and the impacts of policy decisions.

For development and environmental impacts, we’ll delve into the balance between continued residential growth in South Durham and sustainability. How do we navigate between new neighborhoods and the deforestation and pollution that come with that growth?

Affordable housing remains a pressing issue in Durham, and Southpoint Access wants to pay keen attention to ongoing efforts to provide safe, affordable homes for all residents. Look for stories about local initiatives, the effectiveness of federal grants, and the personal stories of those striving to find affordable places to live.

We’ve got a goal of $75,000 to support the journalists who would help make this in-depth coverage a reality. That’s where you come in. Your generous contributions will enable us to produce these essential stories, available free of charge to all our readers. Join us in making a difference. Donate today to support ultra-local journalism that matters to you and our neighbors.
