There’s a dream growing in Durham for Heather Hindin and her daughter, 10-year-old Harper. Called Harper’s Home, the site is expected to provide lodging for families of children undergoing cancer treatment at Duke Children’s Hospital. It all started for this single mother and her child in 2021.

Nearly 40 acres of land at 8250 Fayetteville Road near Hills of Southpoint and Chancellors Ridge are now rezoned to allow Kelley Development Company to build up to 490 apartment units, at least 50 of which are slated to be affordable housing, and 5,000 square feet of office space.

Our 5-year-old daughter, Athena, is currently a kindergartener at year-round Pearsontown Elementary School. Her brother, John Michael, is in fifth grade at Pearsontown. Next year, he’s off to year-round Rogers-Herr Middle School. Without that sibling connection, Athena won’t be eligible to attend first grade at Pearsontown in 2024-2025.
