The long-vacant Sears location at The Streets at Southpoint is getting new life as Dick’s House of Sport, opening Oct. 1 with an experience-driven retail concept tailored to athletes and families.

What’s Inside the New Dick’s House of Sport in Durham?

The store features several interactive elements designed to elevate the shopping experience:

  • Rock-climbing wall
  • Multi-sport cage for testing gear like bats, soccer balls, and more
  • Golf pro shop with custom fittings and expert advice

As Southpoint Access reported in December 2024, Dick's House of Sport isn't just a typical sporting goods store - it’s a hands-on environment aimed at helping customers “try before they buy.”

Grand Opening Weekend: Oct. 10–12

To celebrate the grand opening, Dick’s Sporting Goods is hosting a three-day event packed with giveaways and celebrity appearances:

Free giveaways include:

  • Mystery gift cards (limited quantities)
  • Free soccer balls
  • 30-ounce Stanley drink containers

Meet-and-greets (wristband required):

  • 🏀 Grant Hill – Former Duke Basketball star and current co-owner of the Atlanta Hawks (Oct. 10, 6 to 7:30 p.m.)
  • 🏈 Julius Peppers – UNC football legend and retired Carolina Panthers defensive end (Oct. 12, 12 to 1:30 p.m.)
Note: Special wristbands will be distributed the day of each appearance - limit one per person. Athletes will only sign cards provided by Dick’s Sporting Goods.
