The Durham City Council cleared the way Monday night for up to 28 townhouses on Andrews Chapel Road, approving the annexation and rezoning of a 4.6-acre property that now contains a house and farm pond.

The council voted 5-2 on Aug. 3 to bring 323 Andrews Chapel Road into the city and change its zoning from Residential Rural to Planned Development Residential 6.085. Council members Nate Baker and Shanetta Burris voted no. Mayor Leonardo Williams, Mayor Pro Tem Javiera Caballero, and council members Chelsea Cook, Matt Kopac, and Carl Rist voted yes.

The project would add townhouses to an area dominated by single-family homes. The Durham Planning Commission recommended approval in May by a 7-2 vote, and the applicant said the proposal is consistent with 22 of the 24 applicable policies in Durham’s Comprehensive Plan.
