Durham’s plans to draw more drinking water from Jordan Lake could take a major step Thursday, when City Council considers a $32.4 million design contract for a new treatment plant on Farrington Road.

The proposed plant would initially supply up to 20 million gallons of treated water a day, helping Durham meet the needs of a growing population. City staff estimates the plant project will cost $496 million over its lifetime, including final design and construction.

Council meets at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 17, at City Hall, 101 City Hall Plaza. The agenda also includes property acquisitions for South Durham sidewalk projects, sewer improvements at Downing Creek, and adoption of the Durham Cultural Roadmap.
