Extended Power Outage Prompts Durham Emergency Shelter Opening

Thousands of Duke Energy customers remain without power after problems at a substation on Wednesday. Utility workers may get power back on by 6 p.m. today.

However, if residents remain without power after that, the Durham City-County Emergency Management Department is opening an emergency shelter at 8 p.m. The shelter is at the old Northern High School, 117 Tom Wilkinson Rd. The shelter has cots and food for as many as 150 residents. It will remain open until power is restored. Residents should bring any medications, personal clothing, and hygiene items needed during their stay.

GoDurham will provide free transportation to the emergency shelter from the Wellons Village bus stop.

The Durham County Main Library at 300 N. Roxboro St., is operating as a warming center until 8 p.m. Regional branch libraries are operating as warming centers until 6 p.m.

Residents who need food today may contact Durham One Call at (919) 560-1200 until 5 p.m.

Durham Congregations in Action is also providing free food to Durham Housing Authority residents in the impacted area. Residents who need free food may also visit Communities in Partnership, located at 101 S. Driver St.
