Durham Public Schools is preparing for a hard look at the size, shape, and future of its school system.

At its June 25 meeting, the DPS Board of Education discussed moving ahead with a request for proposals for a districtwide “right-sizing” and consolidation study. The study would examine enrollment trends, building capacity, aging facilities, possible consolidation scenarios, financial impacts, and community feedback.

But board members made clear they didn’t want a consultant to look only at buildings, seats, and dollars.

The larger question was whether any right-sizing plan would preserve the values behind Growing Together, the district’s student assignment plan that reorganized schools into regions and emphasized equity, access to programming, and socioeconomic diversity.
