Vehicle-related theft remained the largest category in this week’s South Durham crime report, but thefts from buildings showed the clearest increase.

Southpoint Access identified 83 police reports dated Aug. 7-13 across a broad section of southern Durham, including southwest and southeast corridors and areas near Research Triangle Park.

That’s 26 fewer reports than the previous week’s total of 109. Most of the change came from vehicle-related theft, which fell from 49 reports to 28.

That doesn’t necessarily mean crime dropped by the same amount. Reports can be added to or updated in the Police-to-Citizen portal after an incident.

The source file also contained only two citywide reports dated Aug. 13, including one in the South Durham coverage area. That day’s count could grow as police add more records to the public portal.

Consider this a weekly snapshot of what appeared in the portal, not a complete measure of crime in South Durham.

How This Report Was Compiled

The downloaded Police-to-Citizen data contained 150 reports dated Aug. 7-13. Southpoint Access removed lost-property records and incidents outside the broad southern Durham coverage area, leaving 83 reports.

We found no duplicate case numbers in the source data.

South Durham doesn’t have a single official boundary. For this report, the term covers a broad newsroom coverage area that includes ZIP codes 27713, 27707, and 27703, along with nearby parts of Research Triangle Park, the Durham-Chapel Hill border, and southern 27701.
