Durham reservoirs fall to 45% amid moderate drought

September rain hasn’t been enough to stop Durham’s water supply from shrinking. The reservoirs are now 45% full, readily accessible supply has fallen to 96 days, and Stage 2 restrictions remain in effect.

A girl died Tuesday evening after Durham police said a gun went off while two juveniles were playing with it.

“We have had devastating, unfortunate incidents over the last couple weeks that have just been really heartbreaking,” Police Chief Stephanie Mardis told City Council members during Thursday's work session.

The girl was one of two people who died in separate shootings Tuesday evening. Minutes earlier, officers found a man with multiple gunshot wounds in the 900 block of Eva Street. He died at the scene.

Early Friday, hours after Mardis delivered her first crime report to the council, police announced another fatal shooting. Officers found an adult man with a gunshot wound in the 700 block of Rigsbee Avenue around 1:54 a.m. He died at a hospital. Police hadn't released his name or information about what led to the shooting as of Friday morning.
