Why Southpoint Access Isn’t in SoDu We Have Favorites
The inaugural contest is meant to spotlight South Durham neighbors and local businesses — not the newsletter behind it. Here’s why Southpoint Access is sitting this one out and why your votes still matter.

So, I wanted to take a moment to thank the (surprising number of) folks who submitted Southpoint Access as a hidden gem or a suggested nomination in an overlooked category for the inaugural SoDu We Have Favorites contest.
Maybe you were disappointed to see I didn't include my own newsletter - focused as it is on South Durham - in the competition.
I get it. I'm sorry. But you deserve an explanation. It's simple, really. The contest isn't about me or this site. It's about my neighbors and the businesses they run. If Southpoint Access was in the running, and if it won a category, it would feel really skeevy to me - like, oh, I don't know, winning my own golf tournament.
So, I'm not in this for awards. What am I in it for? Well, that's a pretty simple explanation too.
I want to be your reliable neighborhood news guy. I want you to spread the word to all your friends and neighbors, encouraging them to sign up for the newsletter (a basic subscription is absolutely free). I want Southpoint Access to grow in readership and relevance. I want it to become the newsletter of record from Brier Creek to Woodcroft to Chancellor's Ridge.
Would making a splash in my own SoDu We Have Favorites contest help those goals? Maybe. But I feel like that would come at the expense of credibility. So I'm steering clear.
All that said: I do hope you'll cast your votes for the many categories that are open for your consideration. We've got until June 1 - then I'll close this round and launch voting for finalists.
And if you're not already a paid subscriber, donor, or sponsor, I appreciate your giving some thought to taking your support of Southpoint Access to the next level! I don't currently work for a salary - I'm independent and mostly doing this on my own, so every little bit helps. Ultimately, I'd like this project to be sustainable for generations to come. Can't do that without my neighbors.
Thanks for reading and for supporting independent, hyperlocal news in your back yard.
