Check your freezer: Lidl recalls coffee and vanilla gelato
South Durham neighbors who shop at Lidl in Apex or Cary should check their freezers. One lot of Gelatelli coffee and vanilla gelato has been recalled over possible listeria contamination.

Lidl is recalling one lot of its Gelatelli coffee and vanilla gelato after routine testing detected listeria in a lab sample.
South Durham doesn’t have any Lidl stores, but neighbors who shop at the chain’s Apex or Cary locations should check their freezers. Those stores are at 670 Grand Central Station in Apex and 1105 N. Harrison Ave. in Cary.
Lidl announced the recall Oct. 16. No illnesses had been reported at the time of the announcement, which the Food and Drug Administration posted Oct. 17.
The affected gelato was distributed to all Lidl stores in North Carolina and other states from July 19 through Oct. 15.
How to identify the recalled gelato
The recall covers this product:
- Product: Gelatelli Coffee & Vanilla Gelato with Coffee Sauce & Cookie Pieces.
- Size: 16 fluid ounces, or 1 pint.
- UPC: 4 0564897 22458.
- Lot number: 085261.
- Best-by marking: MAR/26/2028.
The gelato comes in a clear plastic container with a brown lid. Look for the lot number and best-by date on the bottom of the container.

What shoppers should do
Don’t eat the recalled gelato. Lidl says customers should immediately throw it away or return it to their nearest Lidl store for a full refund. No receipt is required.
Listeria monocytogenes can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections, particularly in young children, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems. Infection during pregnancy can cause miscarriage or stillbirth.
Symptoms can include fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea, according to the recall notice.
For questions, call Lidl’s customer care hotline at 844-747-5435, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern time Monday through Saturday.
