A new fire station is coming to Davis Drive and NC Highway 54, replacing an older facility on Old Page Road with a modernized design in a strategic location.
City Council members on Monday are expected to approve the next step in that process: spending $139,800 for ADW Architects to develop a site plan, identify site improvements, and exploring the costs and benefits of building systems that support the city’s renewable energy and carbon neutrality goals.
In a memo, Jina Propst, director of the General Services Department, notes that the city adopted its Carbon Neutrality and Renewable Energy Action Plan in 2021, with a commitment to two major goals:
- Power city facilities and operations with 80% renewable energy by 2030 and 100% renewable energy by 2050.
- Achieve 50% carbon neutrality in city operations by 2030 and 100% carbon neutrality by 2040.
“Consistent with these goals, the city has outlined specific energy design guidelines for contractors working on existing building retrofits and new capital facilities,” Propst wrote. “This project will be the first to champion these guidelines to develop and implement building strategies to meet the city’s renewable energy and carbon neutrality goals.”
This phase of work on the $11 million Station 19 project is expected to take about three months to complete. The new station is supposed to be in service by Fall 2026.
