[SeeGov Enhanced] Planning Commission Backs 400 Homes Near Farrington Road
Commissioners advanced plans for 350 apartments and 50 townhomes, despite concerns about traffic, crowded schools, and the pace of growth in southwest Durham.

Southwest Durham could gain as many as 400 apartments and townhomes near Farrington Road under two rezoning requests that received favorable recommendations from the Durham City-County Planning Commission on Tuesday.
Commissioners voted 8-2 to recommend approval of Alexan Farrington, a proposed 350-unit apartment community. They later voted 7-3 to support a separate plan for up to 50 townhomes at 4702 Farrington Road.
Both cases now move to the Durham City Council, which has final say. The requests also would bring the properties from county into city jurisdiction. They were among three cases on the commission’s July 14 agenda.
Although both projects carry Farrington Road addresses, they're not adjacent. Alexan Farrington would sit directly along Farrington Road, west of Interstate 40. The 4702 Farrington property has a historical Farrington Road address but would be accessed through the Creekside Commons neighborhood from Randall Road.
Together, the hearings reflected a broader concern among southwest Durham residents: New housing continues to arrive, but roads, schools, sidewalks, and other public services don’t always keep pace.
