Southpoint Access is launching a pet-obituary feature honoring beloved companions, named for Huckleberry and open to families across Durham and beyond.

Vehicle-related theft dominated the latest South Durham report, accounting for more than half of the police reports tracked by Southpoint Access from Sept. 4-10. Most of the increase came from thefts from vehicles.

Southpoint Access identified 116 reports at 88 address blocks. The previous report covered an eight-day window from Aug. 27 through Sept. 3 and contained 87 reports. Even with one fewer day in the latest period, the total was 29 reports higher.

That doesn't mean crime overall rose by the same amount. The Durham Police Department's Police-to-Citizen portal offers a snapshot of selected public reports, not a complete measure of crime, and reports can be added or reclassified later. A report also reflects an allegation or reported event, not a finding that a crime occurred or that someone is guilty.

At a glance

The previous reporting period covered eight days and included two lost-property reports. The latest period covers seven days and contains no lost-property reports in the South Durham subset, so the periods aren't directly comparable.
