Friday night football caps a lighter week in South Durham school sports
Looking for a game this week? Jordan and Hillside are home Friday night, Southern heads to East Chapel Hill, and boys soccer fills the early-week calendar.

The fall sports calendar is getting thinner, but there’s still plenty to see before Halloween arrives.
Friday night football is the main event this week. Jordan and Hillside both play at home, while Southern heads across the county line to East Chapel Hill. All three varsity games kick off at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30.
Before then, the schedule includes girls flag football, the last posted boys soccer matches of the regular season, and an unusually busy week for Jordan’s JV football team.
Monday gets the week moving
Jordan and Southern meet in JV football at 6 p.m. Monday at Jordan High School. It’s the first of two games on Jordan’s JV calendar this week, so families should double-check the schedule before leaving home.
Jordan’s varsity boys soccer team is also on the road Monday for a 6:30 p.m. match at Green Level.
Back in Durham, Southern hosts Hillside in varsity girls flag football at 7:15 p.m. The Spartans bring a nine-game winning streak into the matchup, according to MaxPreps, including a 65-0 win over Hillside in September.
Tuesday belongs to boys soccer
Hillside hosts Northern Durham for a soccer doubleheader Tuesday. The JV teams start at 5 p.m., followed by the varsity match at 6 p.m.
Southern travels to East Chapel Hill for another doubleheader. The JV match begins at 5 p.m., and the varsity teams follow at 6:45 p.m.
Jordan’s varsity boys soccer team finishes its posted schedule Monday, while Southern, Hillside, and Durham School of the Arts each have one more match on the calendar.
DSA wraps up Wednesday
DSA closes its posted varsity boys soccer schedule Wednesday with a trip to South Granville. The match begins at 6:30 p.m. in Creedmoor.
It’s the only game involving one of our nine schools that we could verify for Wednesday.
JV football takes Thursday
Hillside visits Northern Durham at 6 p.m. Thursday.
Jordan’s JV team then plays its second game in four days, traveling to Willow Spring for a 6:45 p.m. kickoff.
That short turnaround is another reason to check the school schedule before heading out.
Three choices under the Friday night lights
South Durham football fans have three varsity games to choose from Friday:
- Willow Spring at Jordan, 7 p.m. Jordan plays at home on Garrett Road.
- Northern Durham at Hillside, 7 p.m. Hillside’s home game will be played at Durham County Memorial Stadium, 750 Stadium Drive.
- Southern at East Chapel Hill, 7 p.m. The Spartans travel to 500 Weaver Dairy Road in Chapel Hill.
Jordan comes into the week after a 62-14 win at Green Level. Southern beat Hillside, 25-0, in the teams’ Oct. 23 meeting.
A quiet week for middle school sports
The fall championship schedule is finished for Durham’s middle schools, and we couldn’t verify any Oct. 26-30 games for Githens, Lowe’s Grove, Lakewood Montessori, Neal, or Rogers-Herr.
Our updated SoDu School Sports Guide includes all 13 events we could verify, along with filters by school, sport, day, and home or away status. It also includes venue addresses, directions, ticket notes, and links to the official school schedules.
Durham Public Schools lists regular game admission at $8 when tickets are required. Elementary-age children and younger are admitted free. DPS uses GoFan for ticket sales and says cash isn’t accepted at the door. Clear-bag and no-re-entry policies also apply.
Schedules can change because of weather, transportation, officials, or field availability. Check the school’s AthleticZone page before leaving for a game.
