Halloween has a way of changing the neighborhood.

That perfectly ordinary house becomes suspicious. Somebody’s lawn sprouts a cemetery. A small person dressed as a dinosaur rings your doorbell and demands chocolate.

Movies understand the possibilities. Give characters one night when disguises are expected, strangers knock on doors, and everyone dismisses alarming noises as somebody having fun, and you’ve already done half the screenwriter’s work.

These 10 films put Halloween to good use. Some unfold on the holiday itself. Others build toward it or make a Halloween outing a memorable part of a larger story.

Consider this a sampler, with treats ranging from childhood wonder to things you should absolutely watch after the kids go to bed.
