Vehicle-related theft drove most of the increase in this week’s South Durham crime report.

Southpoint Access identified 109 police reports dated July 31 through Aug. 6 across a broad section of southern Durham, including southwest and southeast corridors and areas near Research Triangle Park.

That’s up from 77 reports the previous week. Vehicle-related theft accounted for 22 of the 32 additional reports.

An increase in reports doesn’t necessarily mean crime rose by the same amount. Reports can be added to or updated in the Police-to-Citizen portal after an incident, and the portal doesn’t capture every call for service or police investigation.

Consider this a weekly snapshot of what appeared in the public portal, not a complete measure of crime in South Durham.

How This Report Was Compiled

Southpoint Access reviewed 209 reports in data downloaded from the Durham Police Department’s Police-to-Citizen portal. We narrowed the data to the completed July 24-30 reporting period and our broad South Durham coverage area.

We excluded lost-property reports and addresses outside the southern Durham footprint.

South Durham doesn’t have a single official boundary. For this report, the term covers a broad newsroom coverage area that includes ZIP codes 27713, 27707, and 27703, along with nearby parts of Research Triangle Park, the Durham-Chapel Hill border, and southern 27701.
